How can I get my ear piercing to heal?

Saturday, March 29th, 2008
mulls0806 asked:

I’ve had my ears pierced for a few years, but on one ear, my earring has been slowly ripping the piercing, so that it’s a lot bigger than it was when I first got it. Is there anything I can do to help it heal before it rips all the way through my ear?

Ear Gauging and More!

Meagan Estabrook asked:

In the last decade, body piercing has become more and more popular. Some would say it’s an art, much like tattooing, and your body is the canvas. But for many it’s therapeutic as well as a fashion statement. In certain cases, people can have twenty to thirty, or more piercings. America, a hundred years ago, this wouldn’t be acceptable, but today it’s considered a way of expressing your uniqueness and individuality. If there’s a body part you want pierced, you can find someplace to do it, regardless of how crazy it is. In fact the more unusual the location of the piercing the more you get noticed.

One of the most popular body parts for piercing would be the ear. Whether your 2 years old, or 50 years old, pierced ears is one of the more acceptable location for a piercing. But many in the younger generations, have taken ear piercing to a new level by “gauging”. And for those who don’t know this is basically making the hole bigger, so you can wear thicker gauges body jewelry. All piercing rings have a gauge, obviously. Gauge is merely a size, and the standard for ear gauges is 16-18. And from there, the lower the number the bigger the size.

An ear gauge of 10 is the biggest you will be able to pierce it, and not everywhere will do it that large initially. The best way of going to a larger size is consulting a professional about tapering. This is a gradual and less harmful way of stretching your ear gauges. By then you will be able to wear sizes of ear gauges anywhere from 10 – 0000. But usually in the mall the largest you will be able to find is 00 which translates to approximately 3/8 of an inch. So if you plan on going to the bigger sizes, be prepared to have to visit a piercing shop, and possibly look around online for the right size.

But don’t get me wrong, ears gauges aren’t the only place you can make bigger. In fact, there are many places for gauges body jewelry. Whether it’s labrets or eyebrows people will gauges body jewelry on their body. Although, if you plan on gauging the more unusual body piercings it’s recommended not to go any bigger than 10, for cosmetic reasons. But then again, many thought ear gauges were weird but now its widely accepted. (Usually amongst those who are considered “gothic” or “punk”.) Remember, if this is something your considering be sure to take the proper precautions as well as consulting a professional who is experienced in gauges body jewelry.

Gold Piercing Body Jewelry Practical Guide

Thursday, March 20th, 2008
Ken22 asked:

Adorning the body with gold is a sensual experience. Gold jewelry for body piercing is extremely popular today, a revival from a long history from the earliest humans on earth. Whether your interest in body piercing stems from the desire to be fashionable, as a status symbol or to heighten your sexual enjoyment, popular demand has increased the number of piercing studios and choices in gold body jewelry.

Today’s body piercing evolved from different cultures across the globe. This ancient art could well be the most widely practiced form of body adornment. It was also practiced by the Romans who saw ****** piercing as a sign of courage, in addition to using them to attach their cloaks. The Kama Sutra from classical India depicts scenes of ******* piercing. We find evidence of ears, lips and hands being pierced in South America, Africa and Borneo.

Today body piercing artists have taken this heritage and combined it with modern hygiene and piercing techniques, creating new types of piercings such as the ‘diath and rook’ invented by Eric Dakota. The most notable change in the nature of body piercing came a few years ago when fashion world models strutted the catwalk with navel and eyebrow piercings, creating a new wave of general public interest. This opened up a new realm of possibilities for people and confirmed to those already in the know the wide extent of the practice.

Practical Guide to Body Piercing

When you decide to have any part of your body pierced, remember that this is more than fashion, it involves your health. It is wise to keep these points in mind:

The piercing studio should be registered, check for the appropriate permits and certificates. The person who performs your body piercing should wear gloves, protective clothing, hair covering and should wash their hands before they pierce you. All instruments should be sterilized and all surfaces, including the floor are smooth and wipe able. Only disposable needles should be used, with all dressings (gauze, cotton pads) and gold body jewelry sterile packed.

Piercing Guns

The gold body jewelry used with ear piercing guns are not ideal for piercing for several reasons, first being that the guns cannot be sterilized because they are made of plastic and would melt in the sterilization unit. Second, they do not provide a clean, surgical cut, the jewelry is forced through the tissue, causing extensive trauma, because the ends are rounded, not sharp. Piercings done in this fashion are slow to heal and there is an increased risk of inflammation and/or infection.

After Care

Piercings done with the proper equipment usually take from six to eight weeks to heal at which time the jewelry can be changed without any problem. Quality aftercare of your piercing has a great impact on the amount of time your body needs. Healing is one thing, it takes much more time for the pierced skin to adjust and be accepted by your body. After the initial change, is it s a good idea for the jewelry to be left in the piercing at all times for at least the first six months but a longer period is better.

Ear Piercing

Ear piercing is one of the oldest practices. Ear Piercing is a technique of making a very small opening in your ears so that any thing, which is of length equal to needle’s front, can be easily inserted in that part. Ear piercing is one of the oldest practices. Ear Piercing is a technique of making a very small opening in your ears so that any thing, which is of length equal to needle’s front, can be easily inserted in that part.

Common areas of piercing

Common locations for piercing include the rook, tragus, and across the helix .The simple term “ear piercing” usually refers to an earlobe piercing, whereas piercing in the upper part of the external ear are often referred to as “cartilage piercing.” Cartilage piercing is more complex to perform than earlobe piercing and take longer to heal.

Caring for pierced ears

You don’t want germs with your newly pierced ears, so it’s very important to keep your ears clean. For several days after the piercing, you need to clean your ears and put antibiotic ointment on them. Whoever is doing the cleaning should follow these steps twice a day: Wash your hands. Use a cotton ball or swab to apply rubbing alcohol to the earlobe or lobes. Gently rotate the earring in the ear.

Equipments

Only an ear piercing gun or a needle should be used to pierce an ear. The gun is recommended for use on the lobe of the ear only. The reusable ear-piercing gun should not come in contact with the ear. All equipment and jewelry used to penetrate the skin must be sterilized. The jewelry should not be handled when loading it into the gun or inserting it into the opening when using a needle. Disposable cartridges, which sit in the gun, are used to hold the jewelry in place for the piercing. Most jewelry comes in pre-sterilized packaging and should be intact prior to the piercing.

How can I stop my ear piercing from getting infected all the time?

Friday, March 14th, 2008
Berrak G. asked:

I have had a piercing in between my cartilage and ear lobe for about 6-7 years now. About 2 years ago, right above the earring (not the actual hole) started swelling and getting infected. Ever since then, it swells up, gets infected, bleeds, heals, and then swells up again. No matter what I do, after the healing, it gets infected again. What the hell is going on?! How can I stop this?
